Amazing 65daysofstatic gig last night, ay electric Brixton. Ostensibly playing Wild Light, but then just an amazing selection after. Don't know why I booked a London date, I think because it was one of the first announced. But glad we went, fantastic.

Really memorable DVNE gig, supported by Pijn on Sunday at Soup. Soup being basically: a tiny basement in the Northern Quarter in Manchester. So basically an ideal venue.

Before both was a slightly delightful local band who missed being able to say their name clearly (surely the most important skill when you are in that slot?). I say delightful it was a case of personality over talent but they were still delightful.

Pijn were just amazing, to the extent I kinda thought Dvne might actually be a bit of a let-down after that. I must note that Pijn had incredible lighting that I thought was just the state of Soup's lighting; mostly dark but with the bass player well illuminated. But DVNE were all well lit so I guess it was an artistic choice? Anyway: Pijn made a delightful noise and it was good to see them up close, previous time I saw them was on the big stage at Arctangent.

Dvne though really shone as the stars, and making the most of the compressed basement atmosphere. Really just a whole room carried on the tide of sound. The contrast between the two vocalists (the female voice not being present for whatever reason) worked better than ever when you're just a foot away from them. And really giving it all.

If either of these accidentally gets to the stage where they don't play these kinds of venue I really will remember just how good this was.

Tool

Went to see Tool last night. Excellent gig, despite the awful venue: the Manchester **** Arena.

I do wish larger bands would play good venues for multiple nights instead of playing in that godawful place.

Still, a good gig and an excellent show.

Went to see Molchat Doma at the night & day in Manchester last night. Did make me think that access to such places is something I do miss about living in the city (although obvsiously, can still get there!). Also, I've never hung out in the night & day, in the day! I'm going to have to try and spend some time in there some time. Looks like a nice place to work and get some food.

Partly writing this to try and make myself pop in there more!

Went to see Amanda Palmer last night! Was amazing. More storytime than gig, but full context enriches songs so much. It was great.

Shame I had to rush back as she wanted a Patron picture at the end, but.. SLEEEP!

I know big Karen (who I took to the gig) wanted to stay for that, but I'm glad I bailed because today would have been a nightmare if I'd got back EVEN later. Excellent gig though!

Stuffies/Levs gig montage, originally uploaded by draxil.

Went to the Birmingham academy last night to see the Levellers & the Wonder Stuff! As if the line-up wasn't good enough it was also St Patrick's day so we all had an excuse to slot in a pint of the black stuff.

Both bands played stomping sets, a fact my legs still haven't forgotten!

Worth a mention is the fact that (I think) this was the first Stuffies gig with Fuzz Townsend (previously of PWEI) on the drums. Personally I'm just waiting for them to get Alex Griffin in to play "lead bass" ;)

Thanks to Wig, Lewis and Sam for a good night, and extra thanks to Mr A. for putting me up and providing much needed post-gig biscuits!

For anyone who's thinking of coming to the gig tonight:

  • It's at the Manchester roadhouse
  • We're on at about 9:00-9:15ish.
  • If you say your there to see "Digging the dirt" then you should have the £4 entry price waved for you.

Saw the Soulsavers and Mark Lanegan last night at the Ruby Lounge. The gig was excellent; the Soulsavers turned out to be excellent musicians, and Mark was on form, complete with his marvellous gravelly voice.

I must also mention how good the Ruby lounge is! Although it took a mo to find due to not being where google thought it was, it was a fine venue with good sound and a good atmosphere. However top mention must be saved for their bottled beers! A gig venue with nice beer is practically unheard of, but they had a nice selection of Ale in bottles including Bishops Finger and Black Sheep.

Excellent stuff!

Mark Thomas

Went with the [livejournal.com profile] countessfenrig to see Mark Thomas down at the dancehouse last night. It was a good gig, albeit quite non-standard in that the main focus was getting people in the audience to think up a policy for him to go and campaign on. I think we voted in "an age of conscent for religion" (bouncers at churches here we come) and the ability for voters to be able to re-call their MP when they screw up.

There was a lot of standard material in there as well as him mocking our various ideas. I particularly like his campaign to stop Maggie Thatcher getting a state funeral:

So I'm quite enjoying living and working at home. I'm sort of in London one day a week, which is nice. Our new house in [livejournal.com profile] manchester seems to be coming along. We've filed paperwork and things, still waiting for our landlady to tell them that we're not (too) evil.. Hopefully we'll have a move in date before *too* long. The wierdness of myself the [livejournal.com profile] kr0n and [livejournal.com profile] solidcat not being under the same roof can't go on for long (especially as I still actually have to be under the same roof as [livejournal.com profile] solidcat).

Enjoying the entertainment funs of Leamington Spa which have increased since I lived here. I went to see the Holloways the other night at Leam's very own new gig venue. It's totally disproportiantly big, and seems to be run by people who wouldn't know how to make money out of a gold mine.. But it's very convenient. All it needs is to start selling something drinkable, but then, it *is* a gig venue so I shouldn't set my sights so high.

Sigur ros

Went to see sigur ros last night with [livejournal.com profile] krusty. It was far better than I expected, very atmospheric. There were a few musical troughs but these were required to give the brilliant crescendos their required emphasis. Excellent!

Nizlopi

Nipped back to the homeland last night and went to an excellent Nizlopi gig at Warwick Arts Center.

The gig was in the theater which is a strange place for a gig let alone a Nizlopi one. Fortunaetly people were out of their seats and dancing around the auditorium by song #1! This was much to the discust of the Arts Centre Natzis (sorry, ushers). We had to employ some sneaky tactics to get past them at one point.

Anyway, an excellent gig and a good chance to catch up with the Shire folk!

I should document that I went to see Bill Bailey's "Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra" last week. It was great fun! It basically consisted of Bill Bailey doing a gig but with the whole of the BBC Concert orchestra for him to mess with. Oh and just to put the icing on the bagel, it was in the Albert Hall.

Some of this boiled down to him playing some of his normal comedy songs but with extra orchestra oomph, but really that was just filling. The real fun was him playing around with the orchestra, getting them to do an orchestral score for an episode of east-enders or inserting cockney music into the "original" east end versions of classical music pieces.

Probably my favorite (but hardest to covey in text) sequences was him narrating the events of a 70's cop show whilst the orchestra backed him up with amazing 72 piece comic timing!

Also blog-worthy is the fantastic 80's curry that we enjoyed afterwards (well ok the music was 80's the curry was quite fresh). Can't remember the details but next time I find myself in the Albert Hall I must remember to go back there.

Oh he's got a tour going on early next month (tinselworm) so London people, we should get some tickets for that! (ahem).

Just been to see Low in a church. Pretty good gig. Even better beer in the beer-o-drome before/afterwards.

The union chapel is an amazing venue for a certain kind of band. Excellent acoustics, cunningly hidden bar.

Took moj to see 65daysofstatic last night. It was in he Indig02 inside the 02 (that's the millenium dome to you and me). The support acts were awful, but 65days are pretty hard to pick support for so that was probably forgiveable.

The indig02 was a pretty shitty venue. The bar prices OBSENE even by london standards, I'm guessing thats because they charge the same as they do in the main 02 arena. But really the gig would have been far better in one of London's millions of good gig venues, but still..

The main event was really good. I was surprised to learn that 65 days of static were from sheffield, and also that it was physically possible to play a lot of their tracks with a real drummer (who I suspect must have been some kind of machine). Really good!

Reading!

In short: Reading 2007. Awesome.

Despite pre-festival scare stories about the flooding from the river the weather was great (but not so hot that it killed). The Best Pub In The World™ was well on form ( mmmmmmm Dr Hexters Wedding.... ), the BHS cooked breakfasts were juicy and of course there was some music as well.

On the first (music) night we arrived back from the Pub just in time for a storming set by the Subways, which was followed by a possibly even more storming performance by The Living End ( including the sillyness of a guitarist playing a guitar solo from on top of the double bass which was obviously still being played at the time ). That twosome wasn't really topped all weekend, although there were several near misses.

The first few days of headliners were pretty rubbish. We did briefly go look at the Chillies who I always really want to be excellent, but actually were as disappointing as ever so we left.. That enabled us to see some fantastic stuff in the "Alternative" tent. I have no idea who either of the bands in there were (damn not saying your name..). The first of them was a very (proper) edgy talented indie outfit who did live visuals on the screens ( playing speed chess, ripping up flowers, flicking through a photo scrapbook). The second band in there was a very cool instrumental rock band who I'd love to see again. If I knew who they were..

The last day however made up for the first-two in main stage headliner-ness, as NIN and the pumpkins fantastic.

The camping antics were on top form this year as well. We were camped with a dynamic group ranging from the [livejournal.com profile] wiggi to a bunch of private school girls who came with my brother ( kindof a buy one get one free ). The atmosphere on site was really good, and the last night rubbish-bin-drum-parties were fantastic ( although the overly officious & grumpy Scottish security may not agree ).

Can't wait for next year :)

Gig last night was excellent. Ben (Ablewhite) and Ben (Clempson) were in particularly fine voice. Also Ben (Abelwhite) played me a Wonder-Stuff track at the end which was great. I was a bit coffeed but the beer at the Good Ship (in Kilburn) soon sorted that out

Screw this contract for a game of soldiers. I'm taking some time off to go to a gig!

Too drunk, then hungover, then asleep, then busy, then asleep again to make any posts over the weekend so here's a roll-up. Or a summary, or something:

Friday

Went out for sushi (at Hi Sushi in Soho) on Friday to celebrate Raymond's birthday (a guy from downstairs who does downstairs things) and also to see Jarrod off who is being sent back to Zimbabwe by our crappy bureaucrats (hopefully soon to return).

Before going to Hi Sushi we sent to an excellent cocktail bar (also somewhere in soho). I didn't have any cocktails (opting for Mexican beer) this basically gave me good licence to try everyone else's and they were all excellent. I'd defiantly recommend where-ever that place was if I knew what it was called or how to find it.

Hi Sushi was it's typically packed crazy self. The sushi was mostly good and massively plentiful. Also because I stretched the truth about their policy about charging for leftovers just after we got an extra platter Jeff provided an entertaining spectacle by eating himself sick to try and avoid the fine. This climaxed in him cramming 7 California rolls in his mouth at once..

Needless to say he was pissed when he discovered the truth.

After all that (plus more pubs) I slipped off to the Mean Fiddler rock night and Jarrod and his misses came along also. It was pretty good and I think the band was quite good also.

Sunday

On Sunday I helped [livejournal.com profile] mr_road move house and went to a nice pub up there called either the North star (or the northern star?) something with star in the name. It had several nice beers on, a decent beer garden and was quite un-London-like in the price department. Definitely worth a visit.

So far this weekend has felt like a festival! Which is good.

The party/gig on Friday was really cool. We got there at about 9:00 and it ran till about 3:00/3:30. In the intervening period we saw about 3-4 bands, including the headliners Biffy Clyro. In between was filled by fairly shite indie djs who thought they were gods.. The beer was awful and expensive, but plentiful and a pre-gig trip to Quinns helped ensure we were very drunk by the end of it all.

Last night's Deftones gig was defiantly one of the best gigs I've been to in a long while, although it is largely responsible for my injured state now. They played a good set and the atmosphere in the Brixton Academy was electric. I hurt now.
