So (and I'm not surprised) it looks like Caprica is cancelled. But then it looks like it will be replaced with something more BSG like.

Can't help but think the SyFy excec was sitting behind the writers saying:

"So this episode is where we can have is where the viper on raider dogfights kick in, am I right?"

And the writers would give the exec a withering look. Hence Blood and Chrome being their next option.

The last of the Caprica episodes now won't show until 2011!! For no apparent fathomable reason whatsoever (whatever the internal logic of US tv is I'll never understand). I hope they get to answering SOME questions, for me primarily: how the hell do the living cylons tie in with the genesis of the robotic ones?

Update: some more interesting commentary on this:

Still listening to lots of short-fiction podcasts. Mostly to keep my brain at bay really. Anyway recently I've actually been enjoying a UK one recently: starship sofa. It's quite a different style to stuff like escapepod being more magazine; for example they have more than just a single story in each episode.

Futurama

Ooh, /. says that Futurama might be coming back for a proper 6th season! That would be cool. And a whole lost more use to the world than more Simpsons episodes..

Neil Gaimen has pointed out a story which states that Paterson Joseph (who played the Marquis de Carabas in Neverwhere) is the current favorite to take over as Dr Who. I hope this is true, he'd be excellent I think!

TTA press, the people who make Interzone ( and Black Static, Crime Weave etc..) have a podcast of their excellent short fiction, called "Transmissions From Beyond" .

As my "music:" will tell you I'm just listening to the first installment so I can't tell you too much about the content; but all three of their major magazine genres (scifi/fantasy, horror and some crime) seem to be taking equal turns. Not sure how that will keep going as I think crimewave ( their crime fiction magazine) isn't published as often as Interzone (sff) or Black Static (horror).

According to this the Master is back in the upcoming series of Dr Who....

So I've read some good books recently:

Chung Kuo (David Wingrove)

Babblin about Chung Kuo )

Snow Crash (Neil Stephenson)

Babblin about snowcrash )

I have to say given the relative pace of these two books that reading Chung Kuo and then Snow Crash one after the other is defiantly recommended. You get a grand and fantastic deep, detailed, hi-sci-fi epic followed by a fast, crunchy, roller- coaster of plausible-near-future-cyberpunk. Nice.

Work Music

Because of my rediscovery (at home) of the lost art of CD playing, my last.fm profile has spent a few weeks basically charting what I listen to at work. I have to say for the last few weeks that's not been subtle:

Turns out that Bloc Parties - Silent Alarm is the best "shut out the office and actually get some coding done" album in the world (ever). Who'd have thunk it?

I can't watch it yet (because I'm at work) but scifi storm are hosting a bsg3 trail.

Because they're worried about being swamped I've temporarily mirrored it here (5MB wmv file). Here's the original scifi storm story.

Exxxcent episode. Much better than the last end of season dr who. Everyone notice the black Darlek escape? Good, no their all dead thing this time hey?

Cybermen/Darlek bickering was damn hillarious.

No more until Crimble and no good TV until Octobers season 3 of Galactica! I think maybe torchwood starts then as well? What happened to poor old UNIT thats what I want to know..

For those not surgically wired to /., Billy West (voice of several Futurama characters) has done an interview.

Roll on 2008! And October. And August bank holiday. And whenever the next China Mielleville book comes out, and...

The writing in dr who is getting bloody good, after a shakey first episode to this series. Anyone who missed tonights should watch the repeat tomorrow (BB3 7ish I think) as it was a cracker.

FINALLY "classic" un-monkey-ified origial star-wars DVDs!

Galactica may be getting a spinoff called Caprica:

'"Caprica" will be set more than 50 years prior to the events of "Battlestar Galactica" and focus on the lives of two families -- the Adamas (ancestors of future Galactica commander William) and the Graystones. Humankind's Twelve Colonies are at peace and on the verge of a technological breakthrough: the first Cylon.

As "Battlestar Galactica" is about a lot more than space battles, "Caprica" will be as much family drama as sci-fi tale. Remi Aubuchon ("The Lyon's Den," "24") is writing the pilot script; "Galactica" veterans Ronald D. Moore and David Eick will executive produce it.

So due to personel shortages this weeks D&D turned into D20 starwars. And it was absolutly great. The best roleplaying fun I've had in a while.

Definatly recommended for fun fast snappy ropleplaying. Definatly a better application for D20 than D&D, so so it seems to me from one session. Although next time we play this we start having jediness and stuff so I guess there's stuff that I might not like yet..

Some crazy monkeys are campaining for an on-demand season 2 of firefly:

Doesn't seem terribly likely. But you never know, so I've signed their thingamy. I'd happily pay for episodes.

galactica has been picked up for a third series by the Sci-Fi channel. They'd have been seriously stupid not to extend such a good/popular show thats still very much in it's element, but it's reasuring to see it in black and white..

Now all they need to do is get on and screen the second half of series 2!

Galactica!
