All the BBC bashing from
James Murdoch worries me, especially with the
Tory-graph calling for the inevitable Conservative government to cut the licence fee.
Yes the BBC provides a great on-line news service. The argument seems to be because the commercial news providers can't compete we should get rid of the BBC's free service and we should all go pay Murdoch for it instead.
1) If the commercial broadcasters can't compete, they're not good enough. I read plenty of commercial news output, I'm won over by it being good!
2) Even if there is some case that the BBC is unfair competition (I don't buy that obviously but..) an important enough reason to take a great service away from the public? No! Sometimes there are more important things, hence how we put up with the BBC's unfair advantage in making TV and Radio so well!
The BBC news service is genuinely something that is well respected around the globe, and I really hope that we don't let power hungry media tycoons screw it up just to boost their chances of being able to make people pay for their Internet news.
